Canadian Pacific Railway has introduced a new luxury passenger train service to the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia and Alberta. Dubbed the Royal Canadian Pacific, the train makes a circle from Calgary eastward to Golden, British Columbia, southward to Tochty, eastward to Lethbridge and back north to Calgary over a three-day span. This section shows highlights from the first day of the circle trip. These photos were all taken September 15, 2000.

We first catch sight of the train at Morant's Curve, near Lake Louise, Alberta, as F7 1400 passes below us heading west.

The train heads away around one of the most classic locations on the CPR, a spot immortalized by photographer Nicholas Morant and now named for him. The train carries only about 24 passengers, each of whom has paid almost $4000 to ride the trip. Luxury, indeed!

TT3902

The train crosses the border from Alberta into British Columbia at Stephens.

As the tracks descend through the mountains in Yoho Park, the train passes through two spiral tunnels. CPR 1400 is emerging from the west (downhill) portal of the Upper Spiral Tunnel.
