At the same cut, we venture down to ground level to catch Norfolk Southern SD40-2 1630 hustling a short train southward. Now comes the climb back to the top of the cut. . .

We finish off Day One of our Rathole tour at the bridge over the Cumberland River at Burnside, Kentucky. A path off Route 27 at the north end of the highway bridge provides access to two overlooks of the NS bridge. From the first overlook, we see yet another Dash 9-44CW, this time the 9025, leading a northbound auto-rack train.

The second overlook is located at the top of the cut at the north end of the bridge. Norfolk Southern Dash 8-40C 8707 leads our last train of the day, a northbound double-stack.

The following day, August 5, 1999, we head deep into Tennessee to Nemo. We get set up at 10:30 a.m. and almost immediately we see a southbound train led by NS Dash 9-40CW 9363.

We climb to another position to await another southbound at the tunnel/bridge at Nemo. Unfortunately, the next southbound doesn't come until four hours later, at 2:30 p.m. (although there were two northbounds). Norfolk Southern SD40-2 6190 leads the train that finally breaks the drought. Four-hour lulls are extremely rare on the Rathole.
