One of the most scenic and unusual branch lines in the United States was the Grangeville Branch of Camas Prairie RailNet. Located east of Lewiston, Idaho, the Grangeville Branch boasted several huge trestles. In 2000, the Camas Prairie petitioned the Surface Transportation Board to abandon the Grangeville Branch. These photos were taken on September 12, 2000. The following day, the STB approved the abandonment application, and operations on the branch ceased just a few weeks later This is a look at the branch just before abandonment.

The Grangeville Local originated in its namesake town early in the morning of September 12, 2000. Our first good view of the train is just west of Grangeville at the elevators of Fenn, Idaho.

We encounter the first of the many large wooden trestles on the Grangeville Branch at the Stockney Creek Bridge west of Cottonwood.

Another impressive wooden trestle is encountered east of the town of Ferdinand as the train move along at around 20 miles per hour.

TT4003

The chase road is predominately U.S. 95, which bypasses the town of Ferdinand. But by following Old U.S. 95 into town, we discover another wooden trestle on the west side of the village.
