We wander the fields around Escalon, looking for a spot to shoot. A northbound San Joaquin service Amtrak train is due; the bad news is the trains run in push-pull configuration with the locomotive always on the north end, making properly-lit photos a bit of a challenge. Nonetheless, we find a broadside-ish location and snap the train as it rolls through. From there we head down to Riverbank, which has a former Santa Fe yard. A northbound BNSF Railway train is ready to depart, so we set up at the bridge over the Stanislaus River north of downtown and get a nice broadside shot. . . . Read More |

Have a book or magazine project? We have a photo to illustrate any aspect of railroading. Steve Barry has produced two books for a national publisher where he provided all the writing and photography (well over 200 photos in each book), and a third book he authored included about 250 of his photos. In addition, his photos have graced other book and magazine projects.
Like trains? On the Railfan Resource Page you'll find a railroad news section that's updated frequently. There are weather forecasts for railroad hotspots like the Rochelle Railroad Park in Illinois and Tehachapi Loop in California. And you'll find links to restaurant location websites for favorite eateries like Skyline Chili, In-N-Out, and Culver's for when you need to take a break. More resources will be added.
Our online photo section is called Photologues, and there are hundreds of photos available for your viewing pleasure. The site is divided into two primary sections -- The Gallery which showcases some of the best images on the site, and the Photologues section that features photos from specific trips. It's a great place to browse. Everything in the Gallery section is available for retail sale on prints and gifts in the online store.
We're just getting started with our online forums,
where discussion of all things related to railroad photography is
encouraged. Right
now there are only a few users, but if you sign up and ask a question,
I''ll be sure to reply. Help get the conversation going!

On the streets of Philadelphia a PCC-2 trolley, decked out in holiday lights, pauses next to a Christmas tree vendor on Girard Avenue. The date is December 12, 2009, and the streetcar is operating on a charter for the Wilmington Chapter NRHS.

Steve has a bit of a lull in his night photo session activity.
Steve Barry will be presenting a multi-media show to the Cumberland Valley Chapter NRHS at their annual banquet on January 16 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The show will be on steam photo charters and his "The Road and the Radio" show.
In the Big Apple he'll be presenting a program to the New York Division of the Railroad Enthusiatst on January 22. Their website can be found here.
For those planning ahead, Steve will be the guest speaker for the Ottawa Valley Associated Railroaders in Ottawa, Ontario, on April 13, 2010.
As editor of Railfan & Railroad magazine and as an active photographer, Steve has produced many multi-media slide shows and would (probably) love to visit your group. Drop him a note if you're interested.
The Wilmington Chapter NRHS hosts many streetcar and rail excursions, with photo stops coordinated by Steve. Visit the Wilmington Chapter trip page for details on upcoming trips. Next up is the Chapter's Super Saturday Streetcar Special on February 6, 2010.
Steve Barry is the editor of Railfan & Railroad magazine and a life-long railroad enthusiast. Born in New Jersey in 1957, he was introduced to trains by his father, who took Steve down to the tracks in Millville to watch the small fleet of commuter trains arrive from Camden. Since those beginnings, Steve has photographed railroads in 49 states and many Canadian provinces. He joined the staff of Railfan & Railroad in 1996 and became editor in 1998. When asked what his favorite photo subjects are, Steve will answer "everything," and has about 140,000 slides to prove it (although he went digital in 2006). On any given weekend you can find him on a steam photo charter, exploring New York City's subways or just hanging out along a main line. Steve lives in Newton, New Jersey, with his wife Gen and an assortment of dogs, cats and other critters. Gen doesn't count the number of days Steve spends trackside and Steve doesn't count the number of pets Gen has accumulated.
